Breathe ~ Relax ~ Drink Black Tea Often
Donut nibbled by
passing hungry birds and ants
Feast today, and then?
Every morning
Trees leaf through musical notes
Violins hiding
Flowers bloom for Spring
I notice as they fall, stilled
near my front gate
On the long walk home
Seeing a woman I knew
Not stopping to talk
After the deluge
gutters run like athletes in
search of a big race
When I hear a
palm frond falling, I wonder
Who is gardening?
The retaining wall
fell with help from gravity
Rain trickled it down
If whales were music,
what do you suppose they’d be –
Cello notes, swimming?
A single magpie’s
warble sounds like many more
A one bird quartet
Cat’s paw raised and flexed
is a furry white puffball
Sunlight between toes
Nasturtiums dawdle
their way towards the footpath
Their shadows beat them
Raindrops move the leaves
Each drop and leaf devoted
to one another
An empty playground
anticipates movement and
laughs – children arrive
Sunday afternoon
The smell of mown grass competes
with warm carrot cake
Some Stop/Go guys speak
Others keep their own counsel
Shift change tells their tale
When westerlies blow,
palm fronds wave and leaves quiver
Playing to their strengths
A rainbow arrives
after weeks of flooding rains
Hope colours the sky
Down the steepest hill
I feel the age of my knees
Otherwise, joyful
Dogs out for a lark
inspect other dogs’ driveways
Home smells much sweeter
The frangipani
cut-out decorates the deck
and offers a view
After dark, the scent
of night flowers comes to me
A lover with gifts
Before you arrive
our cat strolls to the front door
Anticipation
New names, fresh pages
Phone books: shrink-wrapped, weather-proofed,
await old readers
Butterflies, knowing
it’s Spring, cavort shamelessly
with us as we walk
The soles of my shoes
contact mysterious worlds
with every step
A car driving past
squeaks out every wheel turn
Secondhand love call
