Breathe ~ Relax ~ Drink Black Tea Often
A day’s frosty dawn
gives no hint of midday heat
Tropical winter
The morning’s first chill
Warmed through by the rising sun
Shadow-cold lingers
Sun and wind compete
to warm and chill my skin’s blood
Walking heat wins out
Lizards on dry leaves
make far more noise than their size
Little garden joke
Bare holiday streets
invite thoughts of jaywalking
There’s no fun in it
The garden by day
A scene of earthy delight
Night secrets rustle
Today the garden
floods and ants’ nests overflow
New homes tomorrow
Dog with a big bark
Agitated as I pass
Fences make good walks
Wind buffets their sides
then turns and pushes behind
Air-mugging walkers
Some babies’ cries sound
like tiny drop saws through pine
Intent on cutting
I step on an ant
without care – is it malice
or simple neglect?
Birds chase each other
from tree tops to power poles
Perches are perches
The magpies and crows
set their own standards of play
It’s all in the swoop
A cone surrenders
to the footpath and awaits
opportunities
Shadows change at noon
The afternoon shift hovers
Leaning towards home
Bushwalking in town
Around the library’s park
Reading nature’s way
The monsoon drifts south
Rivers slide over their banks
and lazily spread
On our TV news
helicopters fly and swoop
They land nearby
Winter chill blows in
Antarctica sends greetings
The sun cools its heels
A travelling slide
on its way from grandparents
A new history
Foggy morning air
chills fingertips and aches bones
The sun layers off
Discarded ticket
for a game done and dusted
Memento of loss
High cloud rolling in
changes today’s colour and
brings its own silence
A pair of wet socks
fallen from a tradie’s truck
Their life’s purpose changed
The path most travelled
is only slightly crooked
How easy the walk
In the hill country
people know that what comes down
must rise again too
Container lid dropped
for soup, stew, dessert inside
I’m hungry now, so …
My cat on the deck
Her paws folded so neatly
Lizards think they’re safe
A march of tall shrubs
traps the morning sun’s glitter
Temporary bling
